Arees is a well in Madina where many historical incidents were witnessed. The Messenger of Allah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam wore a silver ring that was inscribed with his seal [Muhammad Rasul Allah]. After him, Abu Bakr and then 'Umar and 'Uthman radhi’allaahu ‘anhum wore it, until it fell off ‘Uthman’s finger into the well of Arees. [Reported by Al-Bukhari] Thus Arees is a symbol of the loss of Islamic scholarship over the years as well as a reservoir of knowledge from which the deprived Ummah can revitalize itself.
